Though anyone can join Russell’s site, its exclusionary title and apparent focus has irked many people on the internet. But Russell doesn’t believe he’s being racist. I dated a black woman once,” Russell told the Washington Post. The “groups” Russell is referring to are the primary audiences for dating websites like Black People Meet or JDate — which allow users to connect with black and Jewish singles respectively. Russell’s views and comments have fueled internet outrage, to the point that what he’s doing feels a bit like performance art; he may even be saying stereotypically racist things to incite anger and draw more attention to his site. The reason people are talking about the dating site is that there doesn’t seem to be a need for it. White people still represent the majority of Americans, and in the dating world, there are benefits to being white.
The brightest planets in August’s night sky: How to see them (and when)
Jupiter and Saturn are near their highest point in the southern sky, while Mars begins to ascend the eastern sky. Here, we present a schedule below which provides some of the best planet viewing times as well directing you as to where to look to see them. The first evidence of a giant planet orbiting a dead white dwarf star has been found in the form of a disc of gas formed from its evaporating atmosphere. The Neptune-like planet orbits a star a quarter of its size about once every ten days, leaving a comet-like tail of gas comprised of hydrogen, oxygen and sulphur in its wake. It is the first evidence of a giant planet orbiting a white dwarf star and suggests that there could be many more planets around such stars waiting to be discovered.
Until now, there has never been evidence of a planet that has survived a star’s transition to a white dwarf. Scientists at Warwick analysed subtle variations in the light emitted from the system to identify the elements present around the star. They detected very minute spikes of hydrogen in the data, which was unusual in itself, but also of oxygen and sulphur, which they had never seen before. Using the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory in Chile to obtain more observations of this star, they found that the shape of the hydrogen, oxygen and sulphur features are typical indicators of a ring of gas.
Lead author Dr Boris Gaensicke, from the University of Warwick, said: “At first, we thought that this was a binary star with an accretion disc formed from mass flowing between the two stars. However, our observations show that it is a single white dwarf with a disc around it roughly ten times the size of our sun, made solely of hydrogen, oxygen and sulphur. Such a system has never been seen before, and it was immediately clear to me that this was a unique star.
Analysing the data, they were able to measure the composition of the disc, and concluded that it matches what scientists expect for the deeper layers of our own solar system’s ice giants, Uranus and Neptune. Dr Gaensicke said: “This star has a planet that we can’t see directly, but because the star is so hot it is evaporating the planet, and we detect the atmosphere it is losing. There could be many cooler white dwarfs that have planets but lacking the high-energy photons necessary to drive evaporation, so we wouldn’t be able to find them with the same method.
Farewell Venus, hello Mercury! The innermost planet steals the spotlight this week
It’s difficult to imagine now, but at certain points in Earth’s history, ice covered the entire planet. This frozen Earth, nicknamed snowball Earth , was a setting “so severe, that the Earth’s entire surface, from pole to pole, including the oceans , completely froze over,” said Melissa Hage, an environmental scientist and assistant professor at Oxford College of Emory University in Georgia. In , Louis Agassiz, a Swiss natural scientist, was among the first to acknowledge and provide evidence that Earth had gone through ice ages, according to the University of California Museum of Paleontology.
Joseph Kirschvink, an American geologist, later coined the term “snowball Earth,” in a textbook. Kirschvink’s work was based on evidence provided by Agassiz and others. Scientists believe that three to four severe ice ages , which froze nearly or all of the surface, occurred between million and million years ago, probably because Earth’s land masses were all located at or near the equator, which resulted in increased weathering.

Our pouches are made of a multi-layered packaging material and are therefore not recyclable. We primarily sell our products in fully recyclable cans. Wild Planet Foods is currently developing a new format of recyclable, single-serving packaging to add better recyclable convenience solutions. Tuna and salmon can both vary in the color of their meat, and since we do not use any whiteners or processing agents, you will see the actual color of the fish in our cans. Wild salmon get their color by eating zooplankton, krill, and shrimp.
These contain a reddish-orange compound called astaxanthin. That shrimp-heavy diet is also what turns flamingos pink. There can be variation among salmon from red to pink to light tan, and even to white in some king salmon.

Venus is the second planet from the Sun and the sixth-largest. Together with Mercury , they are the only planets without a satellite , even though Mercury is closer to the sun, Venus is the hottest planet. Due to its brightness, it can be easily seen with the naked eye, meaning that any ancient civilization could be credited with the first observation. This claim was later verified in by astronomer Johann Schroter.
Though it has been visually observable for as long as mankind can remember, the naming of Venus is again a bit of a mystery. Venus received its most popular moniker via a selection of Roman gods and goddesses. Ancient Babylonians who recognized Venus for example, named it as the Star of Ishtar, their own goddess of fertility, love and war. The symbol for womanhood has even been adopted as the symbol of this planet of love and strong women, being the first and only one with a feminine name.
Prior to being officially dubbed Venus, Greeks and Romans had unknowingly turned Venus into two different stars.

The planet orbits the hot white dwarf, the remnant of a Sun-like star, at close range, causing its atmosphere to be stripped away and form a disc of gas around the star. This unique system hints at what our own Solar System might look like in the distant future. The team had inspected around white dwarfs observed by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and found one to be unlike any other.
By analysing subtle variations in the light from the star, they found traces of chemical elements in amounts that scientists had never before observed at a white dwarf. These follow-up observations confirmed the presence of hydrogen, oxygen and sulphur associated with the white dwarf. The detected amounts of hydrogen, oxygen and sulphur are similar to those found in the deep atmospheric layers of icy, giant planets like Neptune and Uranus.
If such a planet were orbiting close to a hot white dwarf, the extreme ultraviolet radiation from the star would strip away its outer layers and some of this stripped gas would swirl into a disc, itself accreting onto the white dwarf. Combining observational data with theoretical models, the team of astronomers from the UK, Chile and Germany were able to paint a clearer image of this unique system.
